Can I use Home Heating Oil in My Kerosene Tank?

This question came up recently from a customer who lives in a mobile home park and uses an outside kerosene tank to fuel their burner and heat their home. The answer is yes. But we thought we'd talk a little about the differences between Kerosene and Home Heating Oil and what you'll want to do if you choose to receive Heating Oil in your Kerosene Tank.

Generally, Kerosene is used if your oil tank is located outside of your home. This is because Kerosene doesn't "gel" in the colder temperatures of the winter months. Home heating oil can gel if it is left at a temperature of 16-32 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period of time. Clearly, this could be problematic in the winter months here in New England.

But, there is a solution - and it works! Here at T&M Fuel we will simply use an additive such as Hot Shot to prevent this gelling. This is an inexpensive solution, and when combined with the lower cost of heating oil versus Kerosene, can save customers hundreds of dollars in expense.

If you have questions about using heating oil in your kerosene tank, please give the office a call and speak with one of our expert technicians.

We look forward to helping you!
